There is still time to sign up to take part in a short series of new bereavement sessions in Goole.
St John’s Church in the town is inviting residents who have been bereaved in recent years to join them for a course of small group meetings which aim to help people “journey through grief”. The free sessions will begin next month and run once a week for five weeks at the Spire Centre on Church Street. The course is open to anyone who has been bereaved, not just people who attend the church and is being hosted by St John’s associate minister, Graham Dowling.
He said: “The past year or two has meant many of us have lost loved ones either from Covid or other causes and our plans for funerals and memorials have been spoilt. This has been hard on top of the losses themselves. “If you have been bereaved I would like to invite you and any family members to join us in some short weekly open group sessions.” The sessions will focus on a variety of topics including ‘looking at loss’, ‘the pain of grief - how it feels’, ‘the pain of grief - how we deal with it’, ‘coping with change’ and ‘moving on’. The team at the church have run similar bereavement courses previously and say participants have found shared positive feedback. Graham said: “Past participants have found the groups are safe places to talk confidentially. Working through grief takes a long time, and no two people have the same loss or the same journey. “We hope during these weeks to be able to provide a few signposts for you along the way.”
